How does air pollution affect us?

We all need air to live. Every day we breathe about 20,000 breaths, so in a month you could breathe enough air to fill a 25m swimming pool!

People, plants and animals need clean air to stay healthy and to grow. If we breathe too much polluted air it can make us ill. Poor quality and nasty smells can also affect our quality of life. Polluted air especially effects people with breathing problems like asthma.

Air pollution doesn't only affect our health, it can also have an impact on our environment. Some pollutants like nitrogen dioxide and sulphur dioxide contribute to acid rain, which can damage crops, forests and materials, or harm animals and fish.
