Where does air pollution come from?
The air we breathe can become polluted in different ways. The main things that affect the pollution level are:
Some factories, power stations, waste incinerators and even normal buildings have big chimneys which have fumes or smoke coming out of them. These normally release smoke, fumes or gases which make the air that we breathe dirtier. Almost anywhere that people live there will be some pollutants being released into the air.
Cars, buses, trains and planes need fuel to run. Normally is it fossil fuels that are burned to power them. Burning fossil fuels produces a gas called carbon monoxide which can cause health problems for humans.
Hot sunny weather can make air pollution worse, especially if it isn't windy enough to blow the air around. So the weather can have a big impact on pollution levels.
